Vinyl Wednesday: Maceo Parker - Life On Planet Groove
Just like the album from
last week, this is one of my favourite albums in the 90's and on of my favourite live albums of all times.. I had it - and still have it - on cassette tape... I don't know how many hours in total we danced to it on music student house parties.. very often.
i didn't realize at the time that there was no electric bass player but it was Larry Goldings all by himself, together with the brilliant drumming of Kenwood Dennard and the funky guitar of Rodney Jones.
Maceo Parker's sound: It's strong, it's raw, it's hypnotic, it's always a bit sharp, it's on the 1 and all the way around it. He's a drummer on a horn, (no surprise that his brother Melvin Parker is one of the best drummers).
This album and certainly this version of "Shake everything you've got" contributed to my wish of becoming a professional saxophone player. Drive people crazy with a saxophone... That's why I love Maceo Parker's playing so much.
Combine this with the jazzy sound of Pee Wee Ellis and the jazzy funky trombone of the one and only Fred Wesley... there you go!
