Running

Today I started my new running scheme in preparation of the Mizuno Half Marathon in Amsterdam on 16-10-2016. This will be the 5th Half Marathon I am going to run.
How did it all start? I am not really sportive but always liked to bike, swim and walk. Since my early adolescence I hadn't work out hard anymore because of my musical activities. I was too afraid to break a wrist or finger which could mean: end of career. I did enjoy basketball and jazz dance but basketball was getting tricky injury-wise and jazz dance I kind of quit because I kept growing and I felt a bit awkward being 183cm/6ft tall next to the petit and cute girls. Running and athletics: I always felt at the wrong place.

Years later I went to the gym and it worked a bit to loose weight but it became boring after a few years. At some point I quit the gym and started to run little distances and built it up to 5km and more. I bought some good equipment like good shoes and sport bh's (very important) and since about 3 years now I'm running 3-4x weekly, sometimes even 5x.

My first Half Marathon was Egmond, in january 2015, then Weesp in june 2015 and Amsterdam in october 2015 followed. This year I did one in march, Landsmeer. I ended up as the last participant BUT I improved my own PR with 2 or 3 minutes! So what? Those other guys and girls or sometimes grandparents were just too fast... the slow people stayed at home this time! The fact that some old people ran faster is only a confirmation for me to keep going and improving.

Why do I share this? I hope to inspire some of you!
It relaxes my body and mind, I can let go of thoughts and focus again. It's so lovely to close the door behind you and run into the city or nature or park.. Sometimes you greet other runners, recognize people who are running at the same time, passing many animals, watch the nature become coloured by the seasons, feel the rain, sun, wind, smell of the changing times.. and don't get (too) fat in the meantime. No more lower back pain either. When I am running regularly I still can eat and drink normally and keep the same weight.

I am healthier than before, I am more connected to myself, I am more focussed, the best thoughts and even musical ideas come to my mind when I am running.

How?
I use the free Runkeeper App on my smartphone and I am sticking quite precisely to the selected scheme. You can select a goal, f.e. running a certain distance on a certain date and depending on your fitness, a scheme rolls out in your app and tells you exactly when to run and how (fast, slow, intervals). I've selected the "Sub 2:15 Half Marathon" scheme and within 16 weeks I'll be ready for it again and hopefully even improve my personal record... It's important that you have to start slowly and build it up. Don't expect to much from yourself here, just keep going.

Boring? I don't think so..but hey, tastes differ.. I just want to be able to blow my horns all my life, stay healthy and look alright in a dress..
