Every year in april the Netherlands change into a big orange sea. And no, it's no football. The kingdom is celebrated. Well, I don't think that most people think about the kingdom but, hey, it's a good reason to have a big party. The King's Night parties starting at around 18h on the 26th of April, followed by the flea markets which start during the night and last during the whole King's Day (27th of April). At every corner there's a band or a dj playing. Some places have legendary parties with people coming every year, so often it's a reunion. People are doing weird acts, selling stuff, dressing up a bit lik carnaval. Also, Vondelpark is used as a place to display one's kids and let them scratch on a violin or spit into a clarinet and everyone finds it cute and gives the poor kid some money..Let me correct.. Vondelpark is turning into a children's park and they celebrate King's Day together with their parents.
The canals are totally packed with boats with orange people on it, getting more and more drunk. Hilarious. If the weather is right it can be epic because almost all activities are outdoor. If it's rainy or getting to cold you see some drunk people dancing a bit lost in front of the stage while most people just go for a walk and then go home or to thir favourite pub.
This is a tune called Kalunga Dance, from my latest album Dark Horse, order it here or buy it at a concert, the next one is Brebl, Nijmegen 1 day after my birthday on 16th of April! Hope to see you there! In this performance, we featured percussionist/vocalist and world citizen Helene Jank. She lived and worked in Brazil for quite a while and I really think it's audible here. I love the way she and the band creates this moment of space within the concert and this is also why - I think - visiting concerts is important because then you get to experience the whole context of the concert. How is the program build up, how does the audience respond and what does music makes you feel. More info:Susanne Alt: sax, Matthijs Geerts and Ike van Bergen: keys, Thomas Pol: bass, Yoràn Vroom: drums, Helene Jank: percussion Performed at 16th of January 2026 at Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Recorded by Onno Prillwitz Filmed by Robert Glass and Albert Nooij. - Every year in april the Netherlands change into a big orange sea.
