After 5 jazz albums, Saxify is Susanne Alt’s first step into funk. Like many funk saxophonists, Susanne is clearly influenced by Maceo Parker. On Saxify Alt plays powerful melodies formed by tight short notes. The hectical p-funk in the opening track sounds like a false start but luckily her music becomes driven funk which only stops at the end of the cd. The admirable arrangements and Alt’s energetic playing stand out, just like the excellent bass playing of Glenn Gaddum jr.
This album puts Susanne Alt at once at the top of international funk acts. That’s why she probably could count on collaboration of trombonist Fred Wesley, diverse members of the Parliament Funkadelic circus and a choice of (inter-) national vocalists. Finally funk with balls from the Netherlands again.
