Nederlands Jazz ArchiefEnglish:Saxophonist Susanne Alt hails from Germany but has long been a part of our jazz scene. Royalty For Real has the aura of a prestigious product. It is also a tribute to the late trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Hargrove was fond of participating in the after-hours sessions at North Sea Jazz; Alt occasionally played alongside him there – hence Bel Air Bop, one of the seven tracks. The saxophonist/flutist wrote five of the tracks herself, in addition to The Nearness of You and Roy Allan by Hargrove. Like many funk saxophonists, Susanne is clearly influenced by Maceo Parker. On Saxify Alt plays powerful melodies formed by tight short notes. The hectical p-funk in the opening track sounds like a false start but luckily her music becomes driven funk which only stops at the end of the cd. The admirable arrangements and Alt’s energetic playing stand out, just like the excellent bass playing of Glenn Gaddum jr. This album puts Susanne Alt at once at the top of international funk acts. That’s why she probably could count on collaboration of trombonist Fred Wesley, diverse members of the Parliament Funkadelic circus and a choice of (inter-) national vocalists. Finally funk with balls from the Netherlands again.
