Saxophonist, composer, DJ, and producer Susanne Alt is known for her willingness to explore new paths. At 18, she moved to the Netherlands to study jazz saxophone and has lived there ever since. She was one of the first musicians to perform live with DJs, and since 2015, she has also been regularly booked as a DJ. She made her debut as a producer in 2004 with "Nocturne" on her own label, Venus Tunes. This was followed by five more albums, primarily featuring funky and electronic music. Now, she has returned to her jazz roots and released her sixth studio album, which she composed during the enforced break of the Covid-19 pandemic and recorded with exquisite jazz musicians in New York City. It is a tribute album to one of her greatest idols, the trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Alt first met him in 1994 after a concert and was captivated by his spiritually rooted, gospel-inspired music. Later, she regularly played with him at jam sessions after festivals. His death in 2018 at the age of 49 was a shock for her. Two compositions on her new album are by Hargrove: the groovy opener "Roy Allan" and the soulful ballad "The Nearness Of You." The new soundtrack is laid-back and smooth, perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a relaxed evening.
