Nederlands Jazz ArchiefEnglish:Saxophonist Susanne Alt hails from Germany but has long been a part of our jazz scene. Royalty For Real has the aura of a prestigious product. It is also a tribute to the late trumpeter Roy Hargrove. Hargrove was fond of participating in the after-hours sessions at North Sea Jazz; Alt occasionally played alongside him there – hence Bel Air Bop, one of the seven tracks. The saxophonist/flutist wrote five of the tracks herself, in addition to The Nearness of You and Roy Allan by Hargrove. The album was recorded in February 2022 in New York with pianist James Hurt, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Willie Jones III. - door Angelique van OsZe is een stoere dame en kiest niet snel voor de makkelijke weg. Susanne Alt laat op haar nieuwste album (...) absoluut zien wat ze in huis heeft. De saxofoniste presenteert op deze liveregistratie een door haar fans gekozen setlist die ze tijdens dit enkele concert op 4 october 2010 opnam. Geen overdubs of een selectie van beste optredens. Een Kans. Dat siert haar. (...) Alt en haar ijzersterke bezetting voelen elkaar perfect aan. Het kwartet (...) speelt inmiddels alweer vijf jaar samen en dat is te horen. De twee uur durende dubbelaar is een mix van funky grooves en latin flavours waar Alt bekend om staat. Tevens toont ze haar gevoelige kant (op sopraansax) in prachtige ballads (...). Haar solo's zijn swingend en werkend toe naar een pakkende climax. Haar sound is helder en warm. De zelfgeschreven composities zijn toegankelijk en melodieus. Naast de improvisaties van Alt is er ook veel ruimte voor de andere bandleden. Pianist Thijs Cuppen heeft diverse prachtige features en als geheel vormt de band een sterk collectief. The saxophonist presents on this live recording a setlist chosen by her fans during this single concert recorded on 4 October 2010. No overdubs or a selection of best performances. One Chance only. That adorns her. (...) Alt and her strong band understand each other perfectly. The quartet (...) have enjoyed playing together for five years and it shows. The two-hour double CD is a mix of funky grooves and latin flavors where Alt is known for. It also shows her sensitive side (on soprano) in beautiful ballads (...). Her solos are swinging and working towards an exciting climax. Her sound is clear and warm. The original compositions are accessible and melodic. In addition to the improvisations of Alt there is much room for the other band members. Pianist Thijs Cuppen has several wonderful features and the band as a whole constitutes a strong collective.
