Vinyl Wednesday: Miles Davis - Milestones
This is an iconic album, influencing many jazz musicians. The line-up: Miles Davis (trumpet), Cannonball Adderly (alto sax), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums).
For me as a saxophone player, this album is a good example of 2 saxophone players playing in the same context, not being competition, because they think and play so differently. Music itself is no competition. To me, together with leader Miles Davis on trumpet, they represent different colours, almost like the prime colours red, blue and yellow.
When I think of them, and I had to explain them to someone who is not a fulltime jazz freak I would describe them like this: Miles plays minimalistic, thematic and lyrical, Cannonball plays melodic, buzzing and always sounds happy, Coltrane plays monumental, theoretical and cool. Oh, and Cannonballs always succeeds to communicate the tune to the rest of the world, play a funny quote.. while Miles leaves out the notes which make the connection, and Coltrane start to float and fly within his own concept, Cannonball is a bit more connected to the rhythm section.
They all definitely set the tone for generations of horn players to come...
